We’ve all been there—standing in front of a mirror or looking at a bank account, feeling like we’re just running in place. For a long time, my only scoreboard was the scale in my bathroom or the calendar marking my days of sobriety. Don’t get me wrong, seeing those numbers move is a massive win, but I realized something recently: a stagnant mind is the fastest route back to old habits.
That is why I’ve been quietly going back to school. I’m not talking about sitting in a lecture hall; I’m talking about mastering the tools that are actually shaping the world right now. I’ve officially knocked out my Google AI Essentials and Prompting Essentials, and I’m deep into the Digital Marketing and E-commerce course. If you think you’re too old or too far behind to pivot, let me tell you why learning these AI skills is the highest-leverage move you can make for your own “rebuild.”
More Than Just a “Hack”
A lot of people think AI is just a shortcut or a way to get a computer to do your homework. But in the real world, these skills are about reclaiming your time and expanding your capabilities. When I was running my computer repair business years ago, everything was manual. Today, I’m learning how to use these tools to build a foundation for entire new businesses, not just a job.
Learning AI isn’t about becoming a programmer; it’s about learning how to communicate with the most powerful tools ever built. It’s about “Prompting”—the art of asking the right questions to get the best results. When you master that, you aren’t just a guy with a laptop; you’re a one-man creative agency, a data analyst, and a strategist all rolled into one.
I started by completing the Google AI Essentials course which teaches the fundamentals of working with AI tools. https://grow.google/certificates/ai-essentials/
Applying AI to Your Real-Life Mission
So, how do you actually use this stuff once the course is over? Here is how I’m seeing it play out in my own life and how you can apply it too:
- Career Resilience: The IT field moved on while I was away, but AI is the great equalizer. By learning these tools, I’m building a “high-leverage skillset” so I never have to go back to the kind of work that led me to drink. Whether you’re 25 or 57, these skills make you indispensable because you can do in an hour what used to take a week.
- Business Building: I’m not just looking for a “job”; I’m looking to start new ventures. AI helps with market research, drafting business plans, and creating content that actually connects with people. It takes the “guesswork” out of growth.
- Mental Sharpness: Sobriety gave me my clarity back, but AI gives that clarity a mission. Instead of just counting days, I’m counting completed modules and new skills. It’s a new scoreboard that proves I’m moving forward, not just staying away from the past.
The Holistic Rebuild
You can’t just change your body and keep a stagnant mind. If you do, you’ll eventually find yourself standing in the same spot you started, just in a smaller pair of jeans. My journey is about a holistic approach, fixing the body at the park and fixing the future at the keyboard.
The “excitement” of weight loss or the early days of sobriety eventually fades into a routine. That’s where the learning comes in. It provides a constant stream of “wins” that keep the momentum going. Every time I get a “Course Completed” badge, it’s a reminder that I am no longer the person I was 11 weeks ago.
If you feel stuck, start small. You don’t need a degree; you just need curiosity. The tools are there, and they are free or affordable for anyone willing to put in the time. Don’t get left behind because you think it’s too late to learn. It’s never too late to start a secret mission of your own.
